They say everything happens for a reason - I hate that saying, even though I fall back on it all the time. In this particular case, I still haven’t figured out exactly the reason. It was a big event - the 2009 Finalist Reception for the Sydney Business Awards, and I am the MC (drum roll please). Tight schedule, lots to get through. Pretty standard so far. I arrived for my sound and light check, assumed the position behind the lectern and began the run through. While I was speaking I took a step back and wondered out loud why their was a hole in the floor. Uh oh, no hole but also no heel. I had just snapped my Michael Korrs 40 minutes before showtime. How can a girl focus when she knows there’s trouble? and ‘the show must go on’ wasn’t based around a barefoot MC. All my ladylike vocabulary vanished, I was definitely channelling Gordon Ramsey and he was cranky. Tina from the City of Sydney kindly offered to take my shoe to the closest repairer and see what could be done, bless her, a true friend.

I thought about praying and just for a second running away. WOW. I was so vain that the thought of conducting an event in stockinged feet almost sent me over the edge. I had a very enlightened moment because once I had realised what a dumb nut I was being and that in fact I had a great opening line handed to me, not to mention loads of laughs I could play on, I started to breathe again. Did I mention I had held it for what seemed like 30 minutes. Tina walked back in a few seconds before showtime, holding out the shoe. I kissed her. My hero. Then the conundrum: “the shoe man said you can wear it but not walk on it”. Great. Perfect.
