I recently had a conversation with my SBA - Spiritual Business Advisor, Mr Iggy Pintado- www.iggypintado.com.au. Iggy doesn’t know that I call him that yet. We talked about where I have been and where I am going. He asked me what I hoped would be my legacy. Legacy? I’m a small business owner, I focus on building successful profitable businesses, and I focus on making money and moving forward. I don’t focus on what I might leave behind. His question is what elevated him to SBA status because it triggered the stories of where I came from in business and the legacy - there’s that word, which was given to me. And to think that I hadn’t really ever thought of it that way previously because for so long it’s always been about what’s ahead. I have rarely spoken about my parents in business, at least not officially. I include some anecdotes, a couple of funny stories here and there and even make fun of them occasionally as children do. Even old children like me. Iggy made me stop and realise the significance of sharing my stories, their legacy in fact, and maybe I would discover mine. I guess I never understood the relevance of documenting my years growing up with small business parents, the original small business pioneers. So here goes just a small snippet. One blog cannot fully tell the story, not sure even hundred can.

I have been travelling around Australia since March for The Commonwealth Bank Small Business Forums with the esteemed Peter Switzer. I have had a lot of fun, learnt a lot and experienced a little peek into the corporate world. I normally do almost zero travelling, after all my business is land locked in Sydney and specifically George St. I’ve never had to struggle with packing or doing three states in two days with six flights. To suddenly become this business traveller has made me appreciate my routine at work and how glad I am to come home and be home.

They say everything happens for a reason - I hate that saying, even though I fall back on it all the time. In this particular case, I still haven’t figured out exactly the reason. It was a big event - the 2009 Finalist Reception for the Sydney Business Awards, and I am the MC (drum roll please). Tight schedule, lots to get through. Pretty standard so far. I arrived for my sound and light check, assumed the position behind the lectern and began the run through. While I was speaking I took a step back and wondered out loud why their was a hole in the floor. Uh oh, no hole but also no heel. I had just snapped my Michael Korrs 40 minutes before showtime. How can a girl focus when she knows there’s trouble? and ‘the show must go on’ wasn’t based around a barefoot MC. All my ladylike vocabulary vanished, I was definitely channelling Gordon Ramsey and he was cranky. Tina from the City of Sydney kindly offered to take my shoe to the closest repairer and see what could be done, bless her, a true friend.

I thought about praying and just for a second running away. WOW. I was so vain that the thought of conducting an event in stockinged feet almost sent me over the edge. I had a very enlightened moment because once I had realised what a dumb nut I was being and that in fact I had a great opening line handed to me, not to mention loads of laughs I could play on, I started to breathe again. Did I mention I had held it for what seemed like 30 minutes. Tina walked back in a few seconds before showtime, holding out the shoe. I kissed her. My hero. Then the conundrum: “the shoe man said you can wear it but not walk on it”. Great. Perfect.
